The Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens completed a deal today sending Jassen Cullimore and Tony Salmelainen north of the border in exchange for Sergei Samsonov. Looking at it from the Canadiens perspective, they picked up a steady 5th or 6th blueliner in Cullimore as well as Salmelainen, who is full of potential/promise. Now, on the other side of the deal, the Chicago Blackhawks receive an inconsistent player in Sergei Samsonov. Samsonov put in some marvelous seasons with the Bruins years ago and even in the year he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers. During their playoff run, Samsonov was arguably one of there best skaters. Once he signed in Montreal, Samsonov really struggled and just couldn't seem to find his groove. Samsonov set new career lows for himself in goals, assists and points. That being said, my gut feeling tells me that Samsonov won't pan out for the Blackhawks and the deal will benefit Montreal, but if all the players end up playing to their full potential then I think this deal was very fair and will benefit both clubs. On a side note, Samsonov playing at his best in the Windy City may earn him the honour of skating along the side of Martin Havlat and Jonathan Toews next year on the top line. What a line they'd be!
One last note Montreal has publically said that they are going to buy-out Cullimore's contract, thus making him a UFA this summer, why they would acquire him in the first place I get but I dont at the same time, if you know what I mean. At least Chicago might possibly get something out of Samsonov.

I believe the Canadiens have stated publically that they will buy-out Cullimore's contract, meaning he'll be a free agent this summer.
