Deals Done Early On Draft Day

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the San Jose Sharks have completed a trade with both players and draft picks being involved. Coming up North will be goaltender Vesa Toskala as well as LW Mark Bell. The Sharks didn't receive any players in return within this deal, but what they did get was the 13th pick in todays first round, a second round pick in 2007 and finally, a 2009 fourth rounder. Vesa Toskala had a career season last year and has proven that he can win in the season (racking up at least 20 wins in the 30 games he played in both 05-06 & 06-07). Mark Bell on the other hand was quite the disappointment for the Sharks. When San Jose made the deal to get Bell, most hockey analyists had him slatted to skate along side Joe Thornton. Even though there was a lot of hype surrounding Bell's acquisition, he failed to produce (21 points) and was a healthy scratch down the stretch of the season. The Maple Leafs are said to be in talks about working out a contract extension for the Finish netminder. It's hard to make a decision of who benefited from this trade when really the Sharks haven't even gained anything so I'll leave my verdict until things look a bit clearer.

The Florida Panthers have also acquired a goalie. They acquired Tomas Vokoun from the Nashville Predators for a 1st round draft pick and two 2nd round draft picks. This trade is showing that the Predators are definitely unloading. In just the past week they have traded the likes of Hartnell and Timonen and now along with Vokoun. The trade also has opened the door for Steve Mason who had very good numbers(24-11-4, 2.38, .925) while Vokoun was injured last year. The only question is can Mason do it for 60-70 games being the starter. The trade also makes the Panthers significantly better and gives them one of the best goalie tandems in the league with Vokoun and Alex Auld. Florida's big problem last year was keeping the puck out of net(21st with 3.04 goals per game) which lead them to finish 12th in the east but only 6 points out of a playoff spot. Florida could be in contention for a playoff spot next year. All these unloading trades from the Predators also helps the Flames since they had so much trouble against them last year and the fact that they are in the same conference.

The Ottawa Senators announced the re-signing of C Dean McAmmond.

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced the re-signings of RW Mark Reechi and LW Gary Roberts to each one year contracts.
