The hiring of Mike Keenan as the Calgary Flames new head coach was announced today at a press conference at 1:30 pm.
From what I have heard Flames fans are 50/50 on the decision, I personally think it is a great move for the Flames organization just to get some body who has some experience. I know has last couple of coaching jobs have been terrible most notably with the Florida Panthers was terrible. I did listen to the news conference on the Fan 960 and as Keenan pointed out, three times he has been in a coaching situation where new ownership has been introduced, and as he said with new ownership comes new changes with the organization. Keenan never got the chance with his last teams with the ownership and the players he had to play night after night. With all of this said though I like Playfair as the associate coach, he did a good job when he was behind Sutter. Playfair might be able to bring back some of that defensive game just like he did before.
Also announced was that Jim Playfair will be staying with the Flames organization as an associate coach. Darryl Sutter said "Together, they will do remarkable things for this team."
So hopefully he is right. We are all crossing your fingers. Playfair just was not the right man for the job. He didn't have any experience and experience was what the Flames really needed. He went from being the good guy as Sutter's assistant to have to be the boss of the team. I think there was too much pressure and responsibility for Playfair and he simply couldn't handle it. All year I would yell at the TV for his dumb coaching mistakes, whether it was putting Tony Amonte on for the last minute of play being a goal down or just little things. There is a lot to point out so it would take forever to go though them all but I'm sure every Flames fan knows what I'm talking about. Playfair didn't know how to get mad at the veteran players, the only players he seemed to bench was guys like Lombo and he would do it when we needed that kind of player in that certain point of the game, while when Amonte or Friesen made a mistake, it was like nothing happened. Mike Keenan knows how to deal with young guys and veteran guys. I think if a player makes mistakes and continues to make mistakes, Keenan wont stand for it. I think that is what the Flames need.
"I think Mike's record speaks for itself," Darryl Sutter said and I agree with him completely. His Stanley Cup and Jack Adams award is huge.
Now lets hope this is the missing piece of the puzzle towards winning the Stanley Cup for our Calgary Flames. Also more information regarding assistant coach's Rich Preston, and Rob Cookson and Wayne Flemming will be announce in the next week or so, ill keep posted.
